Аннотация

BACKGROUND: Persicaria capitata is widely used in East and South Asian ethnomedicine, especially for urinary tract disorders, urolithiasis, inflammatory skin diseases, and gastrointestinal complaints. Although phytochemical and pharmacological studies have increased, the evidence remains heterogeneous and translationally limited.

PURPOSE: This narrative review summarizes current knowledge on the botany, ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology, safety, and pharmacokinetic relevance of Persicaria capitata, with emphasis on evidence strength, standardization, and translational challenges.

METHODS: Literature from major English- and Chinese-language databases was retrieved through a structured search and narratively synthesized, with attention to extract characterization, experimental design, biological plausibility, and relevance to traditional use.

RESULTS: Persicaria capitata contains flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, lignans, terpenoid-related constituents, sterols, volatiles, and polysaccharides. Preclinical studies suggest anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, diuretic, anti-urolithic, and hepatoprotective effects, with the strongest support for urinary tract-related applications. However, most studies rely on insufficiently characterized extracts, heterogeneous models, and limited toxicological and pharmacokinetic data.

CONCLUSION: Persicaria capitata is a promising ethnomedicinal species, but its development as a modern phytomedicine is restricted by inadequate standardization, limited safety evaluation, and weak clinical evidence.
