PURPOSE: This study was conducted to determine the effect of progressive relaxation exercises on postoperative pain, nausea, and vomiting in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

DESIGN: This is a randomized controlled experimental study.

METHODS: The study population consisted of 105 patients who underwent elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy at the General Surgery Clinic of Osmaniye State Hospital between May 25 and August 25, 2023. A total of 76 patients were included in the sample and randomly assigned to either the intervention (n = 38) or control (n = 38) group. Data were collected using the "Patient Introduction Form," "Visual Analog Scale," and "Perioperative Patient Monitoring Form." Patients in the intervention group performed progressive relaxation exercises at the 2nd, 6th, 12th, and 24th postoperative hours. Statistical analyses included frequency distributions, means, χ2 test, independent t test, and repeated-measures analysis of variance.

FINDINGS: Compared with the control group, patients in the intervention group reported significantly lower pain scores at the 6th, 12th, and 24th postoperative hours (P < .05). Similarly, nausea severity scores at these time points were significantly lower in the intervention group (P < .05). Vomiting incidence was also significantly reduced in the intervention group at the 6th and 12th postoperative hours.

CONCLUSIONS: Progressive relaxation exercises were found to be effective in reducing postoperative pain, nausea, and vomiting following laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Based on these findings, it is recommended that nurses instruct patients in the use of progressive relaxation techniques, as they are noninvasive, easy to implement, and beneficial in postoperative recovery.
