BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a debilitating side effect that leads to sensory deficits, impaired balance, and a reduced quality of life (QoL). This study evaluates the effectiveness of sensorimotor and balance training compared with conventional physiotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: Determine whether integrating sensorimotor and balance training results in greater improvements in balance, neuropathic symptoms, and QoL among patients with CIPN.

METHODS: A single-blinded randomised controlled trial was conducted with 86 participants undergoing neurotoxic chemotherapy. Outcomes, measured at baseline, Week 4, and follow-up at Week 6, included the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G).

RESULTS: Linear mixed-effects modelling revealed significant group × time interactions for balance, physical well-being, emotional well-being, and functional well-being, favouring the experimental group (all p < 0.001). Large effect sizes were observed for balance (d = 0.70-0.82), physical well-being (d = 0.76-0.80), and functional well-being (d = 0.56-0.75). Social well-being showed a small, transient improvement at Week 4 (d = 0.32) that was not sustained at Week 6.

CONCLUSIONS: Sensorimotor and balance training significantly enhance balance, reduce neuropathic symptoms, and improve QoL in patients with CIPN.
