Аннотация

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (WB-MRI) has emerged as a tool for comprehensive screening in asymptomatic individuals. Growing public interest fueled by direct-to-consumer imaging companies such as Prenuvo (Los Angeles, CA) and an increasing public emphasis on preventive health has accelerated popular adoption despite limited evidence supporting its routine use. Proponents argue that WB-MRI enables early detection of clinically occult disease across multiple organ systems without ionizing radiation exposure, improving outcomes through earlier intervention. Technological advances, including diffusion-weighted imaging and accelerated acquisition protocols, have improved feasibility and diagnostic performance. However, WB-MRI screening remains associated with significant limitations, including patient and clinician uncertainty over the management of incidental findings, resultant downstream testing, and the psychological burden of uncertain diagnoses. Importantly, evidence demonstrating improved mortality or morbidity outcomes remains unclear. While WB-MRI has established utility in selected high-risk populations and oncologic surveillance, its broader role as a general screening tool remains controversial. This article examines the advantages and limitations of WB-MRI as a screening tool and highlights the evidence gap that must be addressed before widespread adoption can be justified.
