Аннотация

INTRODUCTION: With the rise of contrast-enhanced Computed Tomography (CECT) and the demand for sustainable clinical radiography practices, multi-dosing contrast injectors (MDCI) are becoming a key area of focus. This project seeks to evaluate the impact of MDCI, focusing on outcomes in environmental sustainability and time efficiency.

METHODS: A 30-day service evaluation project was conducted in March 2024 at a radiology department in a tertiary referral hospital in Singapore. MDCI systems were deployed at both outpatient and inpatient settings. We collected data on the use of MDCI and single-use contrast injector (SUCI) from 25 patients undergoing daily CECT Abdomen-Pelvis examinations. Data parameters included total consumable waste collected, storage space for consumables, total amount of contrast and saline utilisation and lastly, daily device set-up and turnover time for both injectors.

RESULTS: A total of 3000 patients were included in the project. Total consumable waste in 30 days amounted to 102 kg with MDCI and 615 kg with SUCI. A lesser storage space ratio of 1:6.8 was required for MDCI as compared to SUCI consumables. Total wastage of iodinated contrast media (ICM) for MDCI in outpatient and inpatient settings was 6000 ml, whereas for SUCI, it was 30,000 ml in both settings. The total setup and turnover time daily for 25 patients with MDCI was 1170 s, whereas SUCI required 3000 s.

CONCLUSION: Implementing the MDCI system under site-specific workflow and protocol was associated with lower recorded consumable waste and shorter setup/turnover time, which increases radiographers' efficiency. These parameters may contribute to sustainability in appropriate high-volume settings.

PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: CT scans often need a special dye, and reducing waste from this process is important. This study compared a multi-dose injector with a single-use injector by measuring waste, space, dye use, and setup time in a hospital. This study found that the multi-dose system created less waste, used less space, reduced unused dye, and saved time. This matters because it can help make care more efficient and more environmentally friendly.
