Editorial Commentary: Good Outcomes Do Not Necessarily Mean Effective Treatment: A Critical Appraisal of the Causal Relation Between Treatment and Outcome in Calcific Tendinopathy.
Аннотация
Calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder can be treated using a variety of approaches, including noninvasive, minimally invasive, and arthroscopic procedures. Although numerous studies have reported favorable outcomes, many of them lack appropriate controls, making it difficult to differentiate between the effects of treatment and the natural history of the disease. Because calcific tendinitis has a strong tendency toward spontaneous resolution, clinical improvement after treatment alone does not establish causality. Furthermore, placebo effects may substantially contribute to symptom relief. Consequently, the efficacy of many commonly used interventions remains uncertain, which raises ethical concerns. Future research should include appropriate control groups, such as placebo and no-treatment groups when feasible, to quantify the respective contributions of treatment, spontaneous recovery, and placebo effects and thereby establish the true efficacy of available therapies.
