A qualitative exploration of family member perceptions of supporting home-based balance training in persons with multiple sclerosis.
PURPOSE: Family members of individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS) can play critical roles in supporting exercise participation. This study explored family members' perceptions in providing support for persons with MS in a 12-week home-based balance training program.
METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 12 family members (10 spouses/partners, 2 adult children) who supported participants with MS in the intervention. Data were initially analyzed inductively using thematic analysis. Next, finalized themes were deductively mapped onto the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framework.
RESULTS: Six key themes were identified and mapped to TPB domain of attitude (peace of mind, tackling MS together, deeper understanding) and perceived control (low cost-high benefit, facilitative factors, burden of responsibility). Family members perceived the intervention as effective in managing MS, enjoyed their supportive role, and gained varying insights into the functioning of their participants with MS. The short duration of each exercise and on-going support by the research team facilitated the supportive role, while challenges in managing MS-related symptoms as practitioners served as barriers.
CONCLUSIONS: The key factors identified in this study can be used to inform the development of interventions to ensure sustainable support and participant adherence in home-based exercise programs for people with MS.
