Improved accessibility and long-term effects of clinical networks: A mixed methods analysis of the implementation journey of a mature cancer network in Italy.
Аннотация
BACKGROUND
Clinical networks have emerged as strategic approaches to address complex coordination problems in health and social care; however, real-world evidence on the activities and long-term contributions of mature networks remain limited.
OBJECTIVE
This study analyses the implementation of a mature cancer network in Italy, examining changes in access for newly diagnosed cancer patients over a ten-year period and assessing the role of management and policy decisions in shaping the network's development and consolidation.
METHODS
A mixed-method approach is used, combining analyses of administrative data, from 2010 to 2019 with interviews and focus groups involving key network actors. Archival materials are also analysed to trace the network's organizational evolution.
RESULTS
The study shows a progressive improvement in access to cancer services over time, accompanied by increased geographical homogeneity across region suggesting a reduction in territorial disparities; furthermore the network's implementation processes revealed the role of organizational dynamics, leadership, and governance in sustaining long-term success.
CONCLUSIONS
Overall, the results provide insights into how clinical networks can facilitate access to care and inform future research and policy discussions on network-based health system governance.
