Аннотация

OBJECTIVE

Pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal mortality globally. Magnesium Sulphate is the recommended treatment to prevent seizures, yet its use remains inconsistent in settings like Ghana. This study aimed to explore midwives' experiences and to gain insights into the use of magnesium sulphate in the management of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia.

METHODS

Descriptive qualitative research was utilised as part of a larger mixed-methods study investigating the multi-level factors influencing midwives' care of women with pre-eclampsia in Ghana. The findings presented are part of phase 2, which involved interviewing midwives at a tertiary hospital about their experiences. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 35 midwives in 2021 and analysed using thematic analysis.

RESULTS

Three themes were identified from the data: Practical experience enhances understanding and use of magnesium sulphate; Solid education and ongoing training are required for its safe use; and Challenges and barriers to its use.

CONCLUSION

Midwives require strong clinical skills and a solid knowledge base to safely administer magnesium sulphate, a lifesaving but high-responsibility treatment. Ongoing training is essential but must not replace quality pre-service education, which should focus on practical, competency-based learning. However, systemic challenges, such as limited resources, hinder the effective use of magnesium sulphate. Urgent investment is needed to strengthen midwives' capacity and improve pre-eclampsia outcomes.
