Аннотация

BACKGROUND: Small for gestational age (SGA) preterm infants are at a higher risk of neurodevelopmental impairments compared with those who are only preterm. We aimed to explore the relationship between visual-motor integration (VMI) and SGA, along with imaging features available for prediction.

METHODS: We assessed the influence of SGA [including 20 SGA infants and 33 appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants] on VMI from preterm birth and early brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features that may be predictive markers for the development of VMI in SGA preterm infants. Volume, diffusion MRI related biomarkers and fixel-based microstructural markers were analyzed to assess the visual processing associated regions. VMI was evaluated using standardized developmental assessments at 3, 6 and 18 months of corrected age of expected date of confinement (CA).

RESULTS: Brain MRI features within 3 months after birth involved in visual processing regions were found significantly correlated with VMI discrepancies between SGA and AGA preterm infants at 18 months of CA.

CONCLUSIONS: SGA status in preterm infants plays a significant role in developmental delays in VMI. Early brain MRI features are valuable for predicting the development of VMI in SGA preterm infants.
