Аннотация

Combat helmets are designed to protect the skull and brain from ballistic injury, yet inscriptions written upon them during the Vietnam War reveal an additional dimension of protection-one directed toward identity. This article examines combat helmet inscriptions as preinjury assertions of facial and social selfhood. The human face occupies a unique position in interpersonal recognition and communication; disruption of facial integrity through trauma often results in profound disturbances of identity and social reintegration. Drawing upon literature in facial disfigurement, stigma theory, and craniofacial reconstruction, this perspective interprets helmet inscriptions as symbolic acts that externalize personal identity onto the very structure intended to shield the face. When a craniofacial injury occurs, reconstructive surgeons confront not only anatomic damage but also the challenge of restoring recognizability and continuity of self. Viewed in this light, the words written on steel helmets before injury anticipate the central objective of modern craniofacial surgery: preservation and reconstruction of the face as the primary site of personhood. This reflection situates historical material culture within contemporary surgical discourse, emphasizing that craniofacial trauma care extends beyond survival to the restoration of social identity.
