Acute myelopathy caused by granuloma formation secondary to gelatin sponge: A case report of a rare complication.
Аннотация
BACKGROUND
Gelatin-based hemostatic agents are widely used in neurosurgery due to their effectiveness and general biocompatibility. However, rare adverse events such as foreign body granuloma (FBG) formation can occur.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we report the case of a 52-year-old male who developed progressive neurological symptoms compatible with myelopathy following cervical decompression surgery in which Gelfoam® was applied. A FBG was found on imaging and confirmed following surgical excision.
CONCLUSION
This case highlights the importance of including FBG in the differential diagnosis of postoperative neurological deterioration whenever gelatin-based hemostatic agents are used.
