OBJECTIVES: To describe the use of N-butyl cyanoacrylate as an additional method for haemostasis after caudal vena cava venotomy closure during adrenalectomy and to evaluate associated morbidity, mortality and complications in five dogs.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Medical records from a single referral centre were retrospectively reviewed (January 2022 to August 2025) including dogs undergoing adrenalectomy with caudal vena cava venotomy where N-butyl cyanoacrylate was applied post-suturing. Collected data included signalment, clinical signs, imaging findings, tumour type, surgical details, complications, hospitalisation and follow-up outcomes. Postoperative complications were classified as minor (medical management) or major (requiring surgical intervention). Data were summarised descriptively as median (range) or counts and percentages, as appropriate.

RESULTS: Twenty-five dogs undergoing cavotomy for adrenal tumours were identified, of which five met the inclusion criteria. Histopathology revealed three pheochromocytomas and two adrenocortical carcinomas. Cavotomy closure was reinforced with N-butyl cyanoacrylate to control minor suture-line bleeding. Surgical glue was applied at the suture entry point through the vessel wall in three dogs and along the suture line in two dogs, based on the location of minor bleeding. No intraoperative complications related to N-butyl cyanoacrylate application occurred. Postoperative recovery was uneventful; two dogs experienced minor complications including self-limiting hypertension and thrombophlebitis. No short- or long-term complications related to the use of N-butyl cyanoacrylate, including thrombosis or caudal vena cava obstruction, were observed. Three dogs survived to the last follow-up, and two died of unrelated causes.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: N-butyl cyanoacrylate appears to be a safe and effective adjunct for haemostasis following cavotomy in dogs undergoing adrenalectomy with vascular invasion.
