BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) are one of the main causes of morbidity and increased length of stay in hospitals. Infection prevention control is one of the main areas of accreditation standards that ensure the implementation of processes to prevent the spread of HAIs. We sought to determine the impact of implementing accreditation standards on knowledge and practices among health care workers that can prevent the spread of HAIs.

METHODS: From May 2022 to July 2022, a cross-sectional anonymous survey was distributed to a total of 613 health care workers from 4 hospitals located in Kazakhstan, of which 183 individuals completed the survey, resulting in a response rate of 29%. Two of these hospitals had undergone accreditation surveys, while the other 2 had not. The chi-squared test and Fisher's method were employed to analyze the differences in responses between health care workers from accredited and non-accredited hospitals.

RESULTS: The majority of participants were nurses (59.8%), followed by physicians (29.0%), with nearly 40% having over 15 years of work experience. Knowledge of infection control was high across both groups, with more than 90% of participants demonstrating good knowledge (>75%). However, a statistically significant difference (P < .05) was observed for 1 knowledge item, where health care workers in accredited organizations were more likely to identify all patients as potential sources of infection. Statistically significant differences (P < .05) were observed in 50% of the evaluated infection control practices, with health care workers in accredited organizations showing higher adherence. Key measures included hand hygiene after glove removal, proper disposal of personal protective equipment, changing gloves between procedures on the same patient, avoiding the recapping of used needles, and performing hand hygiene when transitioning from a "contaminated" to a "clean" body part during procedures.

CONCLUSION: The study results demonstrate a statistically significant difference in the practical knowledge level of health care workers in accredited and non-accredited organizations. This may indicate that practices in accredited hospitals have lower risks of HAI spread and may ensure a patient safety environment in infection prevention compared to non-accredited organizations.
