Аннотация

Breast cancer persists as a paramount global health challenge, necessitating therapeutic agents that exhibit both mechanistic novelty and favorable clinical tolerability. Although numerous plant-derived phytochemicals demonstrate promising anticancer activity, many conventionally studied species produce these bioactive compounds at suboptimal concentrations, resulting in limited efficacy unless administered at pharmacologically impracticable doses. Consequently, exploration of plant taxa that inherently biosynthesize more potent defensive metabolites warrants priority. Arid and semi-arid ecosystems impose chronic abiotic stresses-including hyperthermia, desiccation, and oxidative pressure-that drive the evolution of specialized, hyperactive biosynthetic pathways in resident flora. These selective pressures yield structurally unique and often more bioactive secondary metabolites compared to those from mesic environments. Despite this compelling evolutionary rationale, desert-adapted species remain disproportionately underinvestigated in oncopharmacological contexts. The present review synthesizes contemporary evidence on medicinal plants endemic to desert regions and evaluates their potential utility in breast cancer therapeutics. Key phytochemical classes are delineated alongside experimentally validated mechanisms, encompassing apoptosis induction, cell-cycle dysregulation, angiogenesis inhibition, oxidative stress modulation, and perturbation of oncogenic cascades such as PI3K/AKT, MAPK, and NF-κB. Preclinical and incipient clinical data are appraised where available, with emphasis on potency, selectivity, pharmacodynamics, and toxicological profiles. Taken together, the work highlights deserting flora as a rich and still underexplored source of possible anti-cancer lead compounds, with clear opportunities for deeper investigation and future therapeutic development.
