Multidisciplinary management of vesicovaginal and rectovesical fistulas developing after laparoscopic hysterectomy: A Qualitative Case Study.

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to evaluate the clinical course of a patient who developed vesicovaginal and rectovesical fistulas following LAH, with a focus on multidisciplinary management and the role of midwifery care in the patient's experience.

METHODS

This study was conducted using a qualitative case study design. The case comprised a 48-year-old female patient who required secondary surgical intervention due to bladder perforation and the development of a rectovesical fistula following laparoscopic hysterectomy. Data were collected from multiple sources, including the patient's medical records, clinical observations, multidisciplinary team documentation, and a semi-structured, in-depth interview with the patient. Qualitative data were analyzed using the six-phase thematic analysis approach described by Braun and Clarke.

RESULTS

Findings showed that surgical complications caused significant psychological distress, while multidisciplinary management and midwifery interventions improved clinical stabilization, psychological wellbeing, and adherence to care.

CONCLUSION

A multidisciplinary and holistic care approach in the management of complex surgical complications has positive effects on patient safety, psychological wellbeing, and overall care outcomes.
