Аннотация

Older adults' perspectives on data privacy and smart health devices (SHDs) are essential for understanding potential security risks. However, limited research examines these perspectives. This qualitative study addresses this gap. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 42 older adults residing in a Midwestern State. Interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis and five themes were developed: (1) Tools for Sustained Self-Management - indicating the use of SHDs to manage chronic health conditions and improve health, and for non-medical purposes; (2) Tools for Health and Reassurance - revealing convenience of SHDs and utility to promote healthy behaviors; (3) Uncertainty and Limited Awareness of Data Governance - highlighting lack of awareness regarding who accesses, collects, stores, and owns SHD data, and limited understanding of privacy practices; (4) Perceived Security Through Trust and Low Risk Appraisal - documenting low perceptions regarding sensitivity of data and placing trust in institutions to safeguard data, and (5) Exercising Control Over Data Sharing - showing the desire to control the sharing of personal data. Findings highlight the need for improved digital literacy education, particularly on how SHDs manage data. They further highlight the need for SHD developers to include older adults in discussions about data governance and device design.
