Genotyping and characterization of Chlamydia trachomatis and Ureaplasma parvum isolates of reproductive aged women in South Andaman Islands.
Аннотация
BACKGROUND
Chlamydia trachomatis is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI) that often remains asymptomatic, complicating control efforts. Characterizing its serovars, particularly in isolated regions like the Andaman Islands, is crucial for understanding local epidemiology.
METHODS
This study involved PCR assays to identify C. trachomatis and Ureaplasma parvum serovars in high vaginal samples from reproductive-aged women attending a gynaecology clinic in Port Blair, India, from August 2020 to July 2022. DNA sequencing of the OMP1 gene was performed to determine genotypes.
RESULTS
Among six C. trachomatis samples, four were identified as genotype E and two as genotype D, predominantly affecting women aged 18-30. Symptoms included yellow-green vaginal discharge. For U. parvum, all seven sequenced samples were classified as serovar 3, primarily affecting women aged 39-49, with symptoms of yellowish-green discharge and chronic pelvic pain.
CONCLUSION
The study highlights the detection of C. trachomatis serovars D and E and U. parvum serovar 3 among women in South Andaman Islands, emphasizing the need for targeted screening and treatment strategies to control STIs in this population.
