[Emergency Bronchoscopy].

Bronchoscopy is an indispensable tool in modern pneumology. In addition to its high diagnostic value, it offers a variety of therapeutic options. When performed correctly and the patient is adequately monitored, it is a safe examination. However, there are relevant risks associated with airway interventions in patients with lung diseases. The most likely emergencies during a bronchoscopy are respiratory failure and iatrogenic pulmonary bleeding, whereas pneumothoraces are frequent post-interventional complications. Furthermore, severe hemoptysis, central airway stenosis and foreign body aspiration are common indications for an emergency bronchoscopy. This article provides an overview of relevant bronchoscopic emergencies.
