BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Vascular interventional therapy is considered as a remedial treatment for acute non-variceal gastrointestinal bleeding. For patients failed to endoscopic diagnosis and treatment, the factors that contribute to positive angiography and the risk factors of rebleeding after transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) have not been fully discussed. The purpose of this present research was to investigate the predictive factors of positive angiography for non-variceal gastrointestinal bleeding failed to endoscopic diagnosis and treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on patients who underwent vascular interventional therapy due to non-variceal gastrointestinal bleeding from January 2014 to December 2021.
RESULTS: A total of 71 patients were enrolled, the mean age of these patients was 52.3 ± 18.8 years. There were 41 cases with positive angiography, transcatheter arterial embolization was successfully performed in 38 patients, and the technical success rate was 92.7%. PT >14 s and clip use were independent predictive factors of positive angiography. Blood transfusion unit ≥4u was independent predictor for rebleeding, while the rebleeding rate was lower when transcatheter arterial embolization was successful performed.
CONCLUSION: For patients failed to endoscopic diagnosis and treatment, vascular interventional therapy was an effective remedial treatment option. PT >14 s and clip use were independent predictive factors of positive angiography, and TAE can help reduce the rate of rebleeding.
