OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate whether Secretoneurin (SN) was elevated in Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and could serve as a potential predictive biomarker in the development of MetS in patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS).
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 86 consecutive participants. Following anthropometric measurements, blood tests, polysomnography, and blood pressure assessments, the participants were categorized into three groups: the MetS(+) OSAS group, the MetS(-) OSAS group, and the control group without MetS or OSAS. Serum SN levels were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method.
RESULTS: The SN levels (pmol/L) of the MetS(+) OSAS group were statistically higher than those of the MetS(-) OSAS group and the control group (p < 0.033). A positive and statistically significant correlation was observed between SN levels (pmoL/L) and serum triglyceride levels (mg/dL) (r = 0.244, p = 0.024 < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that SN may have predictive value in the development of MetS in patients with OSAS.
