INTRODUCTION: Rehabilitation settings involve patients with complex conditions and active therapeutic interventions, which may increase the risk of clinical emergencies. Adequate training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid is essential for healthcare professionals in these environments. This study aimed to assess prior training, theoretical knowledge, and self-perceived preparedness for clinical emergencies among rehabilitation healthcare staff.

METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an anonymous survey administered to physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and nursing assistants working in rehabilitation units of a university hospital. The questionnaire collected sociodemographic data, information on previous CPR and first aid training, theoretical knowledge assessed through clinical scenarios, and self-perceived preparedness for emergencies.

RESULTS: Of the 86 professionals invited, 57 responded and, after exclusion of two incomplete questionnaires, 55 surveys were included in the analysis (63.9%). CPR training had been received by 87.2% of participants, while 47.3% (n=26) had completed a first aid course. Only 14.5% considered their previous training sufficient. Higher theoretical knowledge scores were observed among participants who had completed both CPR and first aid training (mean 7.05/10; P=.03). Self-perceived preparedness was reported by 27.3% of respondents, with higher scores observed in this group (P=.011). No significant differences were observed according to years of professional experience.

CONCLUSIONS: Despite a high prevalence of CPR training, perceived preparedness for clinical emergencies remains low. Combined training in CPR and first aid is associated with higher knowledge scores and greater perceived preparedness, supporting the implementation of structured and context-specific training programs.
