Objective

To analyze the demographic characteristics of HIV-infected individuals receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Tianjin, identify the factors associated with non-standardized follow-up management and provide evidence for the improvement of follow-up management strategies for HIV-infection.

Methods

HIV-infected individuals receiving ART in Tianjin for ≥1 month were collected from China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention from July 18, 2004 to December 31, 2024. The information about their demographic characteristics and ART duration were collected. A multivariate logistic regression model was used to identify the factors associated with non-standardized follow-up management.

Results

A total of 7 201 eligible HIV-infected individuals were included, in whom 563 (7.8%) received non- standardized follow-up management. Multivariate analysis showed that the age ≥56 years was a negative factor for non-standardized follow-up management compared with ≤30 years (aOR=0.58, 95%CI: 0.39-0.88). Non-local household registration (aOR=1.53, 95%CI: 1.28-1.84), being unmarried (aOR=1.85, 95%CI: 1.40-2.45), being divorced/widowed (aOR=1.47, 95%CI: 1.08-2.02), having educational level of college or above (aOR=1.35, 95%CI: 1.07-1.71), ART duration of 1-5 years (aOR=2.53, 95%CI: 1.58-4.05), and ART duration >5 years (aOR=1.85, 95%CI: 1.16-2.97) were positive factors for non-standard follow-up management. HIV-infected individuals with non-standardized follow-up management had significantly lower follow-up adherence rates and viral load suppression rates compared with those with standardized follow-up management (P<0.001).

Conclusions

Non-standardized follow-up management was associated with age, household registration, marital status, educational level, and ART duration in HIV-infected individuals in Tianjin. It is suggested to strengthen follow-up interventions for HIV-infected individuals with non-local household registration, unmarried/divorced/widowed status, higher educational level, and ART duration ≥1 year.
