Influence of a phototherapy unit on detection of neonatal jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia.
Аннотация
The introduction of a phototherapy unit in a rural community hospital resulted in a significant increase in the detection of neonatal jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia in otherwise healthy term infants. Jaundiced newborns who were either missed or ignored in the past were now identified and monitored. Both the number of breast-fed infants and the number of primiparous women delivered increased significantly after the unit was obtained. However, these factors alone did not account for the marked increase in the detection rate of jaundice and hyperbilirubinemia. A sub-population of 94 infants was selected to evaluate the clinical assessment of jaundice in the term infant. The accuracy rate for clinical assessment was 70%; 13.8% of newborns with serum bilirubins above 10 mg/dl (170 umol/L) were not identified clinically.
