BACKGROUND

Prostate cancer is the second most prevalent cancer and the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men worldwide. Despite this, the lack of studies on mortality trends in the Latin American and Caribbean region is limited. For this reason, our objective was to determine the mortality patterns of prostate cancer within Latin America and the Caribbean countries (LAC) and predict these rates up to 2030.

METHODS

The number of deaths and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) for prostate cancer were estimated between 1997 and 2017. Mortality data was retrieved from the World Health Organization (WHO) database for LAC countries. The ASMRs per 100,000 men-years and the estimated annual percent change (EAPC) were calculated to analyze trends by country and age group (all ages, 30–59, ≥60 years). The Nordpred program was used to analyze projected mortality for prostate cancer until 2030.

RESULTS

Using data from 1997 to 2017, the countries with the highest increase in the mortality rate due to prostate cancer were Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, and Venezuela. Most LAC countries presented significant decreases between −0.5 and −2.8%, whereas Brazil, Cuba, Guatemala, and Venezuela showed increases for all ages. Guatemala increased in men aged 30 to 59 years, and ≥60 years. Projections to 2030 suggest a coming increase in prostate cancer mortality attributable to the changing structure and size of the LAC population.

CONCLUSION

Despite the decline in prostate cancer mortality rates in the last two decades, LAC countries still present some of the highest mortality rates worldwide, particularly Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, and Venezuela, Prostate cancer-related mortality rates will show an upward trend in most LAC countries until 2030, due to changes in population structure and size.
