Аннотация

OBJECTIVE: Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is a common oral condition that adversely affects daily functioning and well-being, yet evidence on its economic and quality-of-life (QoL) burden remains limited. This study quantified this burden among Australian adults.

METHODS: A national cross-sectional survey collected data on the presence, duration, and frequency of DH. Annual direct costs (ADC), including self-care products and professional treatment, and productivity losses valued using the human capital approach were estimated from a societal perspective in 2026 Australian dollars. QoL was assessed using the EQ-5D-5L, Dentine Hypersensitivity Experience Questionnaire (DHEQ), and OHIP-14. Costs were modelled using generalised linear models with a gamma family and log link. QoL outcomes were modelled using linear and Tobit regression, adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics.

RESULTS: Among 791 participants, average ADC was AUD 207.03 (SD 260.14), with costs twice as high among participants with DH as those without. Desensitising toothpaste was the largest cost component. Treatment costs and productivity losses increased with symptom duration. Compared with participants without DH, costs were significantly higher among those with symptoms for <6 months (cost ratio [CR] 1.93; 95%CI 1.51-2.50), 6 months to <20 years (CR 1.92; 95%CI 1.61-2.29), and ≥20 years (CR 2.34; 95%CI 1.77-3.14). Adjusted EQ-5D-5L utility scores were 0.025 and 0.027 lower among participants with symptoms for 6 months to <20 years and ≥20 years. OHIP-14 and DHEQ outcomes worsened with symptom severity.

CONCLUSIONS: DH imposes substantial economic and QoL burdens, particularly among adults with frequent or persistent symptoms. Prevention, early identification, and effective management may reduce this burden.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Early identification and evidence-based management of DH may reduce symptoms, improve quality of life, and minimise associated costs.
