This study investigated the spatiotemporal evolution of ecological quality and its response mechanism to urban functional zoning in Chengdu's main urban area, aiming to provide a scientific basis for ecological space optimization. Based on Landsat remote sensing images from 1992 to 2023, the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) was constructed. Spatial autocorrelation analysis and Moran's I index were employed to reveal the spatial differentiation characteristics of ecological quality. Urban functional zones were identified using POI data and the TF-IDF method. Pearson correlation and standardized regression models were used to analyze the driving paths of functional zone weights on RSEI. The results indicate: ① The mean RSEI values for the four periods (1992-2023) were 0.732 3, 0.642 2, 0.554 6, and 0.636 2, respectively, exhibiting a "V-shaped" variation trajectory with an initial decrease followed by an increase. ② The spatio-temporal distribution of ecological quality in the study area successively underwent an evolution trend of "central improvement with peripheral deterioration" followed by "overall improvement." ③ The clustering degree of RSEI initially increased and then decreased. High-high cluster areas consistently remained in the urban periphery, while low-low clusters dominated the central region. The centroid of high-high clusters shifted westward to eastward, the extent of low-low clusters continuously expanded, and post-2013 witnessed gradual fragmentation of low-low clusters. ④ High-intensity development functional zones significantly inhibited ecological quality. Commercial zones showed significant correlation with RSEI, industrial zones exerted the greatest negative impact, and green space zones exhibited a significant positive correlation but low eco-efficiency conversion. The negative ecological effects of public service and cultural-educational zones were controllable. The RSEI in Chengdu displayed a "V-shaped" evolutionary trend, significantly driven by functional zoning heterogeneity. Enhancing urban ecological resilience requires regulating commercial development intensity, strengthening industrial ecological isolation corridors, and embedding green space networks.
