OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate a Pseudomonas asiatica (P. asiatica) strain J68 isolated from chicken in a poultry that produced tigecycline resistance gene tet(X6), carbapenem resistance gene blaIMP-45 and other multiple antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs).
METHODS: Strain J68 was identified using MALDI-TOF MS and average nucleotide identity (ANI) analysis. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by broth microdilution method. PCR screening, conjugation assay and whole-genome sequencing were performed to characterize the strain J68.
RESULTS: The strain J68 was identified as P. asiatica, it exhibited resistance to multiple antibiotics, including tigecycline and carbapenem. Subsequent analysis revealed that 24 antimicrobial resistance genes, including the tigecycline resistance gene tet(X6) and the carbapenemase gene blaIMP-45 were identified in the genome of the strain J68. The isolate belonged to sequence type ST15.
CONCLUSION: For the first time, we report the emergence of tet(X6)- and blaIMP-45-positive P. asiatica strain isolated from a poultry source. The strain J68 exhibited resistance to last-line antibiotics, including tigecycline and carbapenems. The emergence of tigecycline resistance gene tet(X6), along with carbapenem resistance gene blaIMP-45 in strain of chicken origin is noteworthy. Our findings highlight the need for continued monitoring of resistance genes in agricultural environments.
