In vitro evaluation of microleakage in a tricalcium silicate-based cement matured for 12 min or 24 h and covered with glass ionomer cement or resin composite.

PURPOSE: To compare microleakage of calcium silicate-based cement (Biodentine, BD) used alone or covered with glass ionomer cement (GIC) or resin composite (RC) and matured for 12 min (12mBD) or 24 h (24hBD).

METHODS

Seventy-two extracted premolars with class I cavities were divided into two groups (n = 36) based on BD maturation time (12 min and 24 h). Each group was then subdivided by restoration type into three subgroups (n = 12 each): BD only, BD + GIC, and BD + RC. After pH cycling, thermocycling, and methylene blue immersion, microleakage was assessed with a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and the chi-square test (P < 0.05).

RESULTS

Microleakage scoring showed that 12mBD + RC had the least dye penetration, significantly less than 24hBD and 24hBD + GIC. The 12mBD + RC group also had the lowest microleakage proportion. For both BD and BD + GIC, microleakage proportions were significantly lower after 12 min of maturation than after 24 h of maturation.

CONCLUSION

BD matured for 12 min exhibited microleakage equal to or less than that of the 24-h groups. Additionally, sealing was better for restorations with RC over BD than for those with BD alone or BD combined with GIC.
