BACKGROUND: This study compares the functional capacity and handgrip strength of older women with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D) who practiced physical exercises.
METHODS: Twenty-six older women who practiced physical exercises participated in the study (13 with T2D - DM; 13 without T2D - CON). Functional capacity and handgrip strength were assessed.
RESULTS: The groups were similar in age. Regarding functional capacity, there were no significant differences between the groups in any of the tests performed (p > 0.05): chair stand (rep); arm curl (rep); chair sit and reach (cm); 8-foot up-and-go (sec); back scratch (cm) and 6-min walk (m). There was also no difference in handgrip strength (kg) between groups (p > 0.05).
CONCLUSION: The functional capacity and handgrip strength of older women with T2D who practice exercise seems similar to that of older women without the disease who practice regular exercise.
