Аннотация
This article is a personal dedication to the life and work of Charles Gelso (Charlie), whose scholarship profoundly shaped contemporary understandings of the psychotherapy relationship. Rather than providing a conventional academic summary of his contributions, this reflection integrates personal narrative with theory to illuminate the lived meaning of his most enduring construct, the "real relationship." Charlie's work emphasized genuineness and realism within the therapeutic relationship, alongside transference and the working alliance, as central to psychotherapy process and change. Drawing on more than 2 decades of encounters, collaboration, and mentorship, the author reflects on Charlie's influence on her professional identity as both clinician and researcher. These experiences illustrate how his mentorship extended beyond intellectual guidance to include emotional attunement, professional support, and the creation of a secure base. His invitation into research collaboration fostered integration across clinical and empirical worlds that are often viewed as divided within the field. The article also highlights how disagreement, emotional depth, and relational complexity were central to both the collaborative process and the construct of the real relationship itself. Across mentorship, scholarship, and friendship, Charlie's authenticity and willingness to engage fully in relational experience are shown to have been not only theorized but enacted. Ultimately, this dedication argues that Charlie's legacy lives not only in his scholarly contributions but in the enduring human connections he created through real relationships.
