Аннотация

BACKGROUND: Mental health remains under-recognized in Nigeria compared to physical health, with literature often focusing on treatment rather than lived experience. This study aimed to explore how individuals with mental illness perceive and navigate their condition.

METHODS: Using an Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach, we conducted a 90-minute focus group discussion with 14 purposively selected adults at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Rumuigbo. Data were transcribed, coded, and analyzed thematically, supported by observational notes.

RESULTS: Participants (mean age 38 years) described mental illness as a source of shame, fear of rejection, and loss of relationships. Themes highlighted the impact of stigma, side effects of medication, and coping strategies including spirituality, family support, and selective non-disclosure.

CONCLUSION: Mental illness significantly disrupted daily life. Psychiatric nurses should adopt patient-inclusive care strategies that validate the voices of those living with mental illness and integrate their coping strategies into care plans.
