Аннотация

OBJECTIVE: Unsuccessful cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a serious situation that can lead to emotional distress among nurses, including feelings of grief, guilt, stress, and burnout. Despite its psychological impact, limited research has focused on nurses' emotional experiences and the coping strategies they use after unsuccessful resuscitation attempts. The aim of this integrative review was to synthesise and critically evaluate the literature on nurses' emotional responses and coping mechanisms following unsuccessful CPR.

REVIEW METHOD USED: Following Whittemore and Knafl's framework and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a comprehensive search of PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Medline, and Google Scholar was conducted for peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2025. The review included qualitative and quantitative studies. Quality appraisal was performed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, and thematic analysis was guided by Antonovsky's sense of coherence (SOC) framework.

RESULTS: Nine studies met the inclusion criteria. Nurses' emotional responses to unsuccessful CPR were grouped into five themes: grief and loss, professional self-doubt and insecurity, acute stress, chronic emotional exhaustion, and moral and ethical distress. Coping strategies were mapped onto sense of coherence''s three dimensions: comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness.

CONCLUSION: Unsuccessful CPR has significant emotional consequences for nurses. However, it can also be a meaningful opportunity for professional growth. Coping mechanisms such as peer support, structured debriefing, and reflective practices are essential to promote emotional well-being and resilience.
