Relationship between Voice Experiences, Voice Handicap, and Communicative Competence in Nonbinary Individuals.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between voice experiences, perceived voice handicap, and communicative competence in nonbinary individuals.
METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional study involved 30 nonbinary individuals with a mean age of 28 years. Participants completed the following instruments via Google Forms: the voice-related experiences of nonbinary individuals (VENI-Br), the voice handicap index, and the self-assessment of communication competence. Associations were examined using Spearman's rank correlation test, and a multiple linear regression model was used to identify predictors of voice-related experiences, adopting a 5% significance level.
RESULTS: Perceived voice handicap correlated positively with the VENI-Br total score (r = 0.735; P < 0.001), physical factor (r = 0.683; P < 0.001), and interactional factor (r = 0.745; P < 0.001). Voice experiences did not correlate with communicative competence skills. Perceived voice handicap was the only significant predictor of the total score of voice-related experiences of non-binary individuals (F [1,28] = 51.88; P < 0.001; R² = 0.649).
CONCLUSION: The voice experiences of non-binary individuals are influenced by perceived voice handicap and are not related to their communication skills.
