Beyond pain: A phenomenological narrative of interpersonal character strengths in coping with the cancer experience.
Аннотация
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore interpersonal character strengths among cancer survivors and their role in the process of psychological recovery, social reconstruction, and meaning-making after the illness experience.
METHODS
This research employed a qualitative phenomenological approach. Participants included 12 cancer survivors who were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis via 7-step Colaizzi's method.
RESULTS
The findings revealed four main categories: interpersonal competencies, social and communicative strengths, psychological and emotional support receptivity, and social acceptance, each encompassing various concepts. These components, by providing a new perspective on the illness, helped patients view their cancer experience as an opportunity for growth and for strengthening their relationships with the surrounding world-family, friends, and society-while also benefiting from their support.
CONCLUSION
Reinforcement of social support enhanced patients' hope and motivation both for treatment and for continuing life and persevering in the face of challenges.
