Psychological distress and coping strategies among women of color diagnosed with infertility.
Аннотация
OBJECTIVE
To explore the psychological distress and coping strategies among a sample of Women of Color (WOC) diagnosed with infertility.
DESIGN
This study used a qualitative description design, including purposive sampling, standardized open-ended interviews, and applied thematic analysis.
SUBJECTS: Thirty-six WOC were interviewed to understand the psychological distress they experienced. This was expressed in the form of trauma, depression, and anxiety.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Two research questions were used in this study: the first research question inquired about the impact of infertility on the participant's mental health, and the second research question, asked what coping strategies have you employed to deal with this situation?
RESULTS
Three themes emerged regarding the first research question: psychological distress, cultural messages, and cultural silence. Results of question two drew attention to the different coping mechanisms used by the participants to deal with the psychological distress that came from their infertility diagnosis and experience.
CONCLUSION
Infertility is a significant cause of distress, bringing about feelings of guilt and alienation. The women in the study employed several coping strategies, including connecting with family and friends who understood their struggles, seeking therapy, engaging in mindfulness practices, and relying on their faith.
