Аннотация

The aim of the study was to examine the experiences of patients with cancer receiving palliative care regarding support, broadly defined. The research employed a qualitative method using semi-structured in-depth interviews with 30 adults receiving palliative care in Malta in a three-month period in 2024 (June-August). The data were analysed using Thematic Analysis, which allowed an inductive approach to identify emerging issues through open coding. The study identified 3 main themes of support: Support provided by the medical profession; Support and feeling supported in daily activities; Support received and support given. Patients receiving palliative care perceived medical support as being recognised rather than being treated impersonally. Feeling supported was associated with the ability to continue daily activities or maintain social connections, with relatives' encouragement playing an important role. Study participants also provided support; they were assisting relatives in everyday tasks, sharing information about their illness, and preparing tokens - a memento to be left behind after their passing. Findings emphasise the crucial role of a sense of support rooted in relationships, as well as the possibility of continuing to participate in everyday routines and social life.
