Аннотация
BACKGROUND: Organ and tissue transplantation is an effective therapeutic option for several life-threatening diseases, in addition to improving the quality of life, it allows patients to resume daily activities. On the other hand, organ supply is scarce and, consequently, the waiting list progressively increases. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of the organ and tissue donation process in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.
METHODS: This retrospective, cross-sectional, and exploratory study was conducted in the state of São Paulo. All reports of potential donors received by the Centers for Notification, Retrieval, and Distribution of Organs (CNCDO) in the state of São Paulo from 2010 to 2020 were included. Collected data were inserted into a spreadsheet (Excel Software) and transferred to the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) program, version 20.0, for descriptive analysis with the preparation of tables and graphs of absolute frequency.
RESULTS: The results show that the state of São Paulo had 29,719 potential donors, of which 19,270 families were interviewed for organ donation and only 9347 whose organs were transplanted. The main reason for not performing organ donation was family refusal 37.35% followed by cardiorespiratory arrest for 22.88%.
CONCLUSIONS: Although the state showed a significant growth in the number of notifications and eligible donors, family refusal remains the main cause of non-effectiveness and the estimated demand has not been reached in any year in the last decade, except for corneal transplant.
