Аннотация

BACKGROUND: Voice disorders are a major occupational health concern among professionals whose work depends on continuous and efficient voice use. Religious officials are particularly at risk due to the phonatory demands of religious rituals, prolonged speaking durations, and emotionally intensive communication. Moreover, burnout may influence the onset and persistence of voice disorders. Understanding the relationship between voice-related handicap and burnout in religious officials is therefore essential for developing effective preventive and rehabilitative strategies.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the levels of voice-related handicap and burnout between religious officials with voice disorders and those without any voice disorders.

METHODS: The research employed a comparative and descriptive design. Sixty-six religious officials participated: 30 with diagnosed voice disorders (mean age = 39.43 ± 9.00 years) and 36 without any voice complaints (mean age = 43.22 ± 10.55 years). Data collection tools included the Screening Index for Voice Disorder-Turkish (SIVD-TR), the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10), and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The MBI consists of three subdimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment.

RESULTS: The study group's SIVD-TR (median = 4, IQR = 2-6), VHI-10 (14.27 ± 6.65), emotional exhaustion (13.60 ± 5.70), and depersonalization (4.57 ± 3.38) scores were significantly higher than those of the control group, whereas their personal accomplishment scores (median = 19, IQR = 16-23) were significantly lower (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSION: This study revealed that religious officials with voice disorders exhibited higher levels of voice-related handicap and burnout than those without voice disorders. Increased emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, together with reduced personal accomplishment, suggest that voice disorders may gradually impair professional motivation, psychological resilience, and overall performance. The decrease in personal accomplishment may also heighten the perception of vocal inadequacy and its psychosocial impact.
