ImportanceCombined sialendoscopy (CS) is a minimal invasive method compared to submandibular gland (SG) excision and has a high rate of success.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and the gland-sparing rates of the combined approach sialendoscopy and impact on quality of life (QOL) of stone extraction using Multidisciplinary Salivary Gland Society (MSGS; Q10 version) questionnaire in patients with proximal/intraglandular SG stones.DesignThis study was conducted prospectively between September 2021 and September 2024.SettingMersin University, Türkiye.ParticipantsPatients with proximal/intraglandular SG stones undergoing combined sialendoscopy.InterventionUnder general anesthesia, proximal/intraglandular SG stones were removed with combined approach sialendoscopy.Main Outcome MeasuresThe effectiveness and the gland-sparing rates of CS and impact on QOL of stone extraction with CS using MSGS questionnaire in proximal/intraglandular SG stones. Also, MSGS, dry mouth, and salivary gland score gains were calculated.ResultsThere were 45 male and 19 female patients. A mean age of the patients was 42.26 in males, 40.18 in females, and 40.64 ± 15.76 years in total (range, 19-81 years). The stones in 62 of 64 patients (96.8%) were removed successfully, with gland preservation success being 93.7%. The postoperative mean MSGS (5.54 ± 10.91; P < .01), dry mouth (4.75 ± 10.35; P < .01), and salivary gland (0.79 ± 3.87; P < .01) scores had statistically lower than preoperative ones that were 60.59 ± 25.77, 17.23 ± 21.76, and 43.35 ± 13.68, respectively.ConclusionsMSGS comprehensively interrogates salivary gland symptoms and reviews the relation of these symptoms to xerostomia, talking, chewing, and QOL. CS is an effective surgical method for removing proximal/intraglandular SG stones, with a high success of gland sparing and low complication rates.RelevanceThis study suggested that CS is an effective gland-sparing method for proximal/intraglandular SG stones and MSGS could be used for QOL assessment following successful extraction of SG stones.
