Diagnosis and Staged Return to Sport of an Adolescent Triathlete with Bilateral Iliac Crest Apophyseal Injury: A Case Report.

CASE: A 16-year-old adolescent male triathlete presented with left iliac crest apophyseal avulsion fracture and later developed right iliac crest apophysitis. Both injuries were successfully managed conservatively, following a clearly delineated staged return to sport protocol and running progression over 4 months. Imaging modalities used included radiograph, magnetic resonance imaging, followed by ultrasound to assess healing.

CONCLUSION

The present case highlights the complexity of management for an iliac crest apophysis avulsion fractures in an adolescent male triathlete, including a novel rehabilitation and return to sport protocol. At the 1-year follow-up, the patient remained pain-free with return to triathlons.
