Аннотация

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety (SA) and binge drinking (BD) are both prevalent during young adulthood, a developmental period characterized by heightened social challenges and increased alcohol use. Emotion regulation (ER) has been implicated in both conditions, yet little is known about how ER operates their co-occurrence. This scoping review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the literature on ER abilities in young adults with SA and/or BD.

METHODS: A systematic scoping review on ER abilities in SA and/or BD among young adults was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. Three databases (i.e., PubMed, Scopus and PsycINFO) were searched for research published up to March 30th, 2026. The main inclusion criteria included young adults (aged from 18 to 30 years old) with SA and/or BD and ER as exposure criteria. From 3236 papers initially identified, 60 were included in this review.

RESULTS: This review indicates that ER difficulties were observed in both SA and BD. Findings in SA consistently pointed to maladaptive ER, particularly avoidance-based processes, whereas findings in BD more broadly supported ER difficulties and coping-related drinking motives. No study assessed ER using a validated and specific measure of both SA and BD simultaneously, underscoring a critical gap in the literature.

CONCLUSION: ER appears to be relevant in both SA and BD, but its role in their co-occurrence remains largely unexplored. Clarifying these mechanisms may help inform future research and intervention in young adults.
