Аннотация

Case and Deaton's deaths of despair theory contends that a variety of social and economic factors account for educational attainment's association with midlife mortality from poisonings and suicide. One untested hypothesis within their broader theory is the role of religious attendance in this association. Drawing on data from early midlife respondents from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we examine the association between religious attendance with four precursors to deaths of despair: prescription opioid misuse, other drug use, suicidal ideation, and regular binge drinking. Our analysis reveals that attendance is not a mechanism for the association between education with the four precursors. However, regular attendance predicts lower rates of other drug use, suicidal ideation, and regular binge drinking-but does not predict prescription opioid misuse. In sum, religious attendance may play a role in reducing risk for some premature mortality precursors, yet this role is not consistent with the deaths of despair theory.
