Perfectionism and anxiety sensitivity in soccer referees: the mediating role of distress tolerance.
Аннотация
BACKGROUND
The present research aimed to analyze the relationship between perfectionism, sensitivity to anxiety, and distress tolerance in soccer referees.
METHODS
The sample consisted of 268 Spanish soccer referees from different categories and experience levels, and a correlational and cross-sectional design was used. Validated instruments such as the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale - Short Form (MPS-SF), the Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 (ASI-3), and the Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS) were employed.
RESULTS
The results showed that perfectionism, especially socially prescribed perfectionism, co-occurred with higher anxiety sensitivity, thereby increasing referees' emotional burden. On the other hand, referees with higher distress tolerance showed a better manage of their emotions better under pressure, which positively impacted their performance perceived and decision-making. In addition, distress tolerance partially mediated the relationship between perfectionism and anxiety sensitivity.
DISCUSSION: In conclusion, the implementation of psychological training programs is essential to improve referees' distress tolerance and emotional coping strategies, optimizing both their performance and psychological well-being in the professional domain.
