Аннотация
This article describes a 30-year jorney to understand the cause of what was known as idiopathic constipation, which I eventually found to be irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with secondary holding on, learnt by the affected infant at such a young age that by the time they were a year old their only symptom was intractable constipation. Patients recovered after having breath tests to identify the sugar that was indigestable and then being treated by exclusion of the offending sugar from their diet.
