OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the regional distribution of infectious disease control institutions and medical response resources to support preparedness and resource management.

METHODS: We examined 223 institutions designated for infectious disease control or operating national infectious disease beds as of June 30, 2025. Institutional characteristics were obtained from Regional Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local governments, while medical resource data were obtained from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service. We assessed regional distribution, bed capacity, ownership, institution type, national infectious disease bed status, negative-pressure isolation beds, critical care equipment, and personnel.

RESULTS: The largest numbers of institutions were in Jeonnam (44), Gyeongnam (40), and Busan (30). Of the 223 institutions, 123 (55.2%) had fewer than 300 beds and accounted for 239 negative-pressure isolation beds, compared with 1,571 negative-pressure isolation beds in institutions with ≥300 beds. Overall, the institutions had 5,823 ventilators, 314 extracorporeal membrane oxygenation devices, and 812 continuous renal replacement therapy devices. There were 174 infectious disease specialists, 318 pulmonologists, and 40 pediatric infectious disease specialists. Major equipment and specialist personnel were concentrated in regions with large hospitals, particularly Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Busan.

CONCLUSIONS: Medical response resources varied by region and hospital size, with negative-pressure isolation beds, critical care equipment, and specialized personnel concentrated in larger hospitals and select regions. These findings reveal that infectious disease response capacity should be assessed not only by the number of designated institutions but also by the distribution and availability of medical resources.
