OBJECTIVES: to translate, culturally adapt, and validate the Sexual Risk Behaviors Scale (SRBS) for the European Portuguese language and culture. The adaptation process sought to ensure conceptual, linguistic, and cultural equivalence, making the instrument suitable for Portuguese higher education students.
METHODS: cross-sectional observational study. The translation was performed according to international guidelines; face validity was assessed by a panel of four sexuality experts; construct validity was assessed using results from 68 questionnaires completed online by health science students, as well as through correlation with the questionnaire "Students' Attitudes Towards Addressing Sexual Health - European Portuguese version". Internal consistency was also calculated.
RESULTS: the European Portuguese version showed a Cronbach's alpha of 0.881, and demonstrated adequate psychometric properties, proving to be culturally appropriate for Portuguese students.
CONCLUSIONS: the European Portuguese version of the Sexual Risk Behaviors Scale is a valid and reliable instrument for use among the Portuguese population and in institutional settings.
