An In vivo Study to Compare Reliability of Dermatoglyphics and Rugoscopy for the Prediction of Different Classes of Malocclusion and Gender Diamorphism in Normal Adults.
Аннотация
INTRODUCTION
Dermatoglyphics and palatal rugae, both formed during prenatal development, remain constant throughout life and offer significant forensic and diagnostic value. This study assesses the relationship between these patterns with skeletal malocclusion classes and gender.
MATERIALS AND
METHODS
A cross-sectional study was conducted on 120 subjects equally distributed across skeletal Class I, II, and III malocclusion, confirmed through cephalometric analysis. Palatal rugae were evaluated from alginate impressions and dental casts, while fingerprints were recorded using a digital bio scanner. Patterns were categorized using established classification systems. Statistical analyses including chi-square and ANOVA tests were applied.
RESULTS
Loop fingerprint patterns predominated in Class I (62.7%) and Class II (59.3%), while whorl patterns were significantly higher in Class III (50%). Wavy rugae patterns were more frequent in Class I (64.2%) and II (63%), whereas curved patterns were common in Class III (45%). Loop patterns were significantly more common in females. Inter- and intra-examiner reliability showed strong agreement (ICC > 0.80). Loop patterns were significantly more common in females. Inter- and intra-examiner reliability showed strong agreement (ICC > 0.80).
CONCLUSION
Dermatoglyphics and rugoscopy offer potential as adjunctive indicators of malocclusion classification. Their association with specific occlusal patterns can contribute to early diagnosis and treatment planning.
