Human intestinal myiasis caused by Eristalis tenax.
Аннотация
INTRODUCTION
Human intestinal myiasis is an uncommon parasitic infection, usually related to the accidental ingestion of Eristalis tenax eggs.
METHODS
We report the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with passage of motile larvae in stool. Diagnosis was established by macroscopic examination of the faecal sample.
RESULTS
Larvae compatible with E. tenax, a fly with worldwide distribution, were identified. Treatment with ivermectin was initiated, with favourable clinical outcome.
CONCLUSIONS
This case highlights the importance of food hygiene and the need to consider parasitological examination in patients with nonspecific digestive symptoms and unusual stool findings.
