INNOVATIVE NON-TRAUMATIC FIXATION DEVICE FOR LABORATORY RABBITS IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH: DESIGN, APPLICATION AND ADVANTAGES.
Аннотация
OBJECTIVE
To design, test, and implement a novel Restraining Device for Laboratory Rabbits (RDLR) used in ophthalmological and pharmacological research, ensuring safe immobilization, enhanced visibility, and minimal animal stress during experimental procedures.
METHODS
A custom fixation apparatus was developed using lightweight transparent plastic with a modular ear fixation block and integrated LED illumination. The unit includes a hinged acrylic door, ventilation openings, and slots for tail access and sanitation. New Zealand white rabbits were used in a series of imaging and pharmacological manipulation tests involving auricular vein sampling, topical drug application, and ocular imaging.
RESULTS
The RDLR provided effective stabilization of the animal's body and head in physiological posture. The device facilitated auricular vein visualization without the need for sedation during short-term procedures. All procedures were successfully completed with full visibility, high operator safety, and without behavioral signs of distress.
CONCLUSION
The RDLR is a reliable, humane, and ergonomic solution for small animal research. It reduces procedural variability, ensures reproducibility, and complies with ethical standards of animal care. The system is adaptable for various research settings, including ophthalmic drug delivery, blood sampling, and non-invasive imaging, and is suitable for animals weighing over 4 kg.
